A CLIENT OF MINE once said to me, after a particularly tough session, that sometimes she wished I could just click my fingers and make everything okay.

I told her sometimes I did too.

Particularly when I'm helping clients struggle through very difficult and traumatic moments, the compassion in me wants nothing more than to find a magic formula to make everything better. It's a wish I've made more than once. (Sometimes all I want to do is give someone a hug).

The truth is though, the healer in me wishes no such thing. The healer in me wishes instead that my clients are blessed with the discovery of their own power.

Now, this might seem counter-intuitive. I certainly don't wish for people to struggle for months and years to heal old issues, release emotional trauma and find abundance in their lives - no more than I wished (or wish) such a thing for myself. Though it's true that for very many of us that has been our journey. What I do wish for and what I believe is the divine right of all, is for my clients to have a powerful and personal experience of their own limitless capacity to heal.

It's a gift I think makes all the hard work worth it.

The process can sometimes be tough and it can seem endlessly long. We wonder when it will be over. We doubt that things for us will ever really change. We make the mistake of thinking that others don't know what we're going through. And we believe there's something inherently broken or wrong with us, that makes us - just us - singularly incapable of ever feeling or being any better.

Whether we're dealing with feelings of unworthiness or a lack of self-love. Whether we're healing past familial trauma or processing feelings of abandonment. Whether we're coming to terms with past violence or working through manifestations of physical pain. The journey can feel longer than the many years it took Odysseus to find his way back to Ithaka after the Trojan War.

But I wouldn't deny anyone the peace, satisfaction and empowerment that comes with going on that journey for themselves. And actually, I couldn't even if I really wanted to for it's just not the way things work. And you shouldn't believe any `healer' who tells you that it is.

Thankfully I can do something, though. And that has become the focus of my work. I can help people towards an experience of themselves as their own master healer.

As a Reiki Practitioner, my job is to make sure that one day - sooner rather than later, hopefully - you don't need me anymore. My job is to support you on your road to your own Mastership. Until then, my honour and my joy is to help you and to witness you, moving towards your own self-empowerment. My blessing is to play a small part in your unfolding brilliance and your opening to love.

My very best teachers have done the same for me. I owe it to them to do the same in turn.

So no, I don't want to snap my fingers and magic away your pain. I would never do you such a disservice.

It means of course that your healing will depend on how much you want it. And how much you're prepared to take responsibility for your process. But I believe in you. More importantly, I trust you. And I know that with the right amount of love, support, guidance and dedication to the process, you can - and will - magic it away yourself.

With love and a wish for your Perfect Balance,

PS. My favourite poem as a kid was “Ithaka” by Greek Egyptian poet - Constantine Cavafy. Back then, I loved it for its mythology and its fantastical imagery. Now, I understand just how truly it speaks of the gifts available to all of us along our journey. I hope you like it as much as I do, and that it provides you with a guiding light on your path to remembering your wholeness.

ITHACA
When you set out on your journey to Ithaca,
pray that the road is long,
full of adventure, full of knowledge.
The Lestrygonians and the Cyclops,
the angry Poseidon -- do not fear them:
You will never find such as these on your path,
if your thoughts remain lofty, if a fine
emotion touches your spirit and your body.
The Lestrygonians and the Cyclops,
the fierce Poseidon you will never encounter,
if you do not carry them within your soul,
if your soul does not set them up before you.

Pray that the road is long.
That the summer mornings are many, when,
with such pleasure, with such joy
you will enter ports seen for the first time;
stop at Phoenician markets,
and purchase fine merchandise,
mother-of-pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
and sensual perfumes of all kinds,
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
visit many Egyptian cities,
to learn and learn from scholars.

Always keep Ithaca in your mind.
To arrive there is your ultimate goal.
But do not hurry the voyage at all.
It is better to let it last for many years;
and to anchor at the island when you are old,
rich with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting that Ithaca will offer you riches.

Ithaca has given you the beautiful voyage.
Without her you would have never set out on the road.
She has nothing more to give you.

And if you find her poor, Ithaca has not deceived you.
Wise as you have become, with so much experience,
you must already have understood what the Ithaca's mean.
